Teaching Phonics in Upper Elementary
Hey there!
The beginning of the year is in full swing for everyone. You are either just getting started or you're a month or more into the year with your students. No matter your circumstances you might be feeling the pressures of having students on varying levels of instruction and creating a plan for how you will support them in their learning.

If we go back to what we know about how kids learn to read, then we can gain more clarity in understanding what our support can look like throughout the year.
So, the Simply View of Reading, which is a theoretical framework, tells us that for students to become good reading comprehenders, they need two things: word recognition and language comprehension. Therefore, if we look at supporting students in these two categories, then we can simplify (such a beautiful word) our teaching while also impacting our students.
As upper elementary teachers, the hardest concept for our teaching always seems to be supporting students who are struggling readers. We need them to read in order to think critically about the text, and for students who have poor word recognition, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade standards are hard.
That is why my last two videos on YouTube have been focused on helping with word recognition. Be sure to check them out and grab all the resources in the community!

Don't forget that the introduction slides, exit tickets, and anchors are all in the community! You can find those items in the NEW Word Study Folder on the main page of the community.
NEW LOOK COMING
One of the biggest challenges we all face is the overload of information that is constantly being thrown at us (including the community that you are a part of). So finding ways to simply the information and to make it easy for you to go back and reference, we are incorportaing NEWSLETTERS.
In fact, this email that you are currently reading is a newsletter! Now, when you go to your library, you will find a new item titled: Bridging Academics. This newsletter will hold all of the posts (emails) that go along with the community updates, bits of learning and reminders.

So even if you miss the email, you can always visit the Bridging Academics newsletter in your library to catch up on all the new items! One final change we will make to this new setup is that we will only be releasing two monthly newsletters. With this change, we will also communicate more regularly in our Facebook Community and through the Monthly Resource folder in the community.
We are so excited about the changes and resources that are coming. I hope this will help you navigate all the resources more easily and updates on new research and learning around academics.

WHAT'S NEW
We are excited to release a NEW section in the community! To help you locate the newest releases each month, we will have every new product and training placed in the What's New folder on the homepage of the BLC. This will allow you to easily see (in a snapshot) all the items that have been uploaded.
On top of being located there, you will ALSO find all the products in their "home" location. Thank you for the input and please continue to help us think through how to improve the BLC experience for you.

NEW VIDEO
Teaching vocabulary is so important in elementary school. It is a key component to ensure that students can comprehend what they are reading. Check out this video and the resources in the community (I've added the newest vocabulary items into the What's New folder).
I hope everyone is doing well (especially those of you who were located in the hurricane's path). Stay safe, and please reach out if you need anything!
Warmly,
Bridget Spackman
